Outlander: A terribly underrated movie ... ?!?

Hello.

Seen any good movies lately? What are some good movies you've watched recently? Its been ages since I've watched anything recent that was worth blogging about.

I've actually started watching movies that came out few years back. It seems re-watching a movie a few years or even months later can totally change the view you held of a movie. You might end up truly liking a movie that you didn't enjoy before. Its weird, but it does happen sometimes, especially if you watch a decent copy of a movie.

I remember watching Outlander when it came out back in 2008. I didn't think much of it then. Am not saying I hated it, just that I didn't think it was a really good movie then.

I watched it again a few days back, in full HD glory, and it turned out to be a brilliant movie. Kind of makes me think why I didn't like it the first time I watched it. I don't know.

The film begins with a spaceship crashing in to Norway, in the year 709 A.D, the era of Vikings. The lone survivor of the crash, Kainan, is taken prisoner by the Vikings. Soon, mysterious disappearances and brutal deaths take place around the Viking settlement and Kainan, tell them an alien creature called the Moorwen is responsible. Initially and understandably so, the Vikings seem hesitant to believe his story, but soon the intergalactic space traveller join forces with the vicious Viking sword fighters to trap and kill the beast.

The movie sports a great cast. James Caviezel as Kainan the space traveler from a far-off world, Sophia Myles as Freya the daughter of the king and Kainan's love interest. It also stars Jack Huston as Wulfric, the young short-tempered Viking warrior, Ron Perlman as Gunnar, the burly leader of the enemy Viking warriors and John Hurt as Rothgar, the king.

James Caviezel was perfect as spaceman adjusting to Viking way of life and Sophia Myles was beautiful and graceful even as a Viking. I remember she was amazing in Hallam Foe, another movie you might want to check out if you haven't seen it yet.

I don't know why Outlander did so poorly in the box office, but I really liked the movie. I think its a very good movie, and is terribly underrated by most movie critics.

Have you seen Outlander? I would like hear your thoughts in the comments.

Have you read all Tintin comics yet ???

Hello …

Today I saw the trailer for the upcoming movie The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn and I have to say, it looks pretty darn interesting. I think its going to be huge.

I wrote here before about reading Adventures of Tintin comics when I was younger and reading them again recently. As kids, me and my friends tried collecting all Tintin books. None of my friends were able to collect them all, and neither did I. There were always a few titles missing.

Times have changed since when we were kids, and now, every Tintin comic ever published is available for download on the internet. I list below all the titles I found online. You can easily download the PDFs here if you ever want to read any of the Tintin comics.

Who is Anthony Zimmer ???

Hello.

Several weeks back, I watched a movie called Anthony Zimmer. It is a French thriller starring Yvan Attal and the beautiful Sophie Marceau.

Let me tell you a little bit about the movie. Anthony Zimmer is a french money launderer and career criminal. He is being hunted by police as well as the Russian mafia, but after plastic surgery, no one can recognize him, making him impossible to find. The only valid connection anybody has to Anthony Zimmer is his ex-mistress Chiara.

Chiara is persuaded to help in on the hunt, but no one is ever sure which side she is on and when she would switch sides.

On the way to Cannes by train, Chiara picks up Francois, a nerdy and recently divorced man, to mislead the people following her. She seduces Francois and invites him to drop his boring and uneventful life to join her. Now the police and the people following Chiara believes they have found the man they were looking for. Francois desperately tried to evade the people trying to kill him while trying to get know Chiara better, who never seems to tell the truth.

It was a brilliant movie, highly enjoyable with commendable performances and realistic action scenes.

But you may wonder why I am talking about a French movie I watched several weeks back. Well, it seems Hollywood is doing what it does best again. They are making their own version. The Tourist.

The Tourist stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie and if reports are true, it is an exact copy of Anthony Zimmer. I say if the Tourist is anything like Anthony Zimmer, it will be a worthwhile watch, but I am skeptical. Hollywood has a bad track record of messing up good movies and books.

Anyways, I hope it will be a good movie. Johnny Depp has been an international favorite for years, and looks quite the part. Angelina Jolie has not done a good movie in years. I think it is time Angelina Jolie starts to take roles that she can deliver with confidence, and quit believing she can still fight off a half the city police force and a whole SWAT team with make-shift weapons. (Remember Salt?)

You can watch the trailer for French movie Anthony Zimmer here and watch the first trailer for The Tourist here.

Resident Evil: Afterlife ... the movie sucks !!!

Hello.

Most guys would love the scantily clad girl shooting double-guns or doing the twin-sword thing. I was a fan of sexy Milla Jovovich shooting zombies all around while doing impossible acrobatics. I thought she was real badass! I was a fan till the end of the second movie, if you think about it now, it may have been one movie too long!

The direct sequel to Resident Evil was Resident Evil: Apocalypse. The third movie was Resident Evil: Extinction. Now comes Resident Evil: Afterlife. I was not expecting this movie to be made, as Resident Evil: Extinction was a total waste of time.

In all these movies, Alice, is infected with T-virus which was manufactured by the evil Umbrella corporation. Apparently she is the only one who has successfully bonded with this T-virus, giving her superhuman abilities. She fights to avoid capture, fights to survive, fights to rescue others, fights to kill zombies and fights to stop evil in general. Did I mention she fights?

I did not enjoy this movie, it sucked! Thinest plot ever. You are here, you go there, shoot zombies on the way, kill the boss, twice! Credits roll. Also, zombies have become more of a petty nuisance rather than scary walking dead. There were no edge of the seat sequences and no jump scares. Every zombie movie has jump scares, right? No, not this one. It seems this movie is less about character or story and more about how many CG effects you can incorporate in every scene. CG effects were nice, though.

Ali Larter (Niki Sanders from Heroes) and Wentworth Miller (Michael Scofield from Prison Break) was around as well. Did zilch for the movie.

One thing you would undoubtedly notice is the abundance of slow motion in the movie. It was not badly done, just unnecessary and futile. It felt like 3/4 of the whole movie was in slow motion. I think you can watch the movie in half hour if you watch it at regular speed. Yes, it was that bad!

May be the movie was made to be watched in 3D only, because the the regular version I watched was a total let down. I think exploding brains inches from your face might have its uncanny appeal. Anyone, who has watched it in 3D please feel free to tell me I am wrong. I actually would like to be wrong this time.

I think the title of this movie, Resident Evil: Afterlife, is quite appropriate, mostly because Resident Evil franchise has been long dead.

Prince of Persia defies the future ...

Hello.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has been out for a while. I watched it a couple of weeks back. But yesterday, I watched it in all of its high definition glory 720p. It was good, and I thought it deserved a blog post.

The movie is based on the video game character of the same name. I did play the earlier games, though not the recent ones, and remember that I had a lot of fun playing them. Hence, I was excited about the movie and expectation was high.

The story is different from the games but there are some scenes which will make you smile in recognition. Story goes something like this.

Dastan, (Jake Gyllenha) a young street boy is taken under the wing of a gracious King for his bravery and grows up to be adoptive brother to the heirs of Persian throne. In the King's absence, and ignoring Dastan's objections, the Persian army led by Dastan's brothers and uncle (Ben Kingsley) decides to invade the Holy City of Alamut assuming they are forging and supplying top-grade weapons to the enemies. Unbeknownst to his brothers, Dastan manages to gain access to Alamut and open the gate, hence avoiding a massive confrontation and a bloodbath. While in Alamut, Dastan finds a dagger and keeps it. Here on the events take a turn, and Dastan is blamed for treachery and murder, and flees the scene with Princess of Alamut, Tamina (Gemma Arterton), with the Persian army hot on their trail.

The story unfolds that the dagger he kept earlier is filled with Sands of Time, and is capable of transporting the bearer back in time, to change things in his favor and Princess Tamina is it's guardian. Dastan decides to go back to Alamut to learn the truth and clear his name. Tamina has her own agenda and wants the dagger back but agrees to go with him. They meet and make alliance with a reluctant shiekh (Alfred Molina) who claims to be a "slightly dishonest entrepreneur".

Being a big budget summer movie it provides entertaining characters, intense action scenes, and good eye-candy visuals.

Some of the scenes were a bit overwhelming for me. Zipping along rooftops, putting modern urban parkour artists to shame. Missing arrows whizzing past by inches. Amazing rope swinging accuracy with impossible acrobatics and doing backflips to a safe doorway when the whole place is crumbling down. But I liked the few slow motion shots, they did not feel obvious or redundant. Nice.

Once you get in to the movie it is as pleasing as any other movie of the ilk. You can sit back and enjoy this movie and forget about it. It is entertaining and just as easily dismissible.

Also, the movie finally manages to give the Prince a name, Dastan, which all the games past failed to do. I do not like that name.

Gemma Arterton was beautiful and sensuous. She definitely looked the part of a Princess.

I could not help wonder the parallels the story takes to the actual events that has transpired in our recent history. America invading Iran (then Persia) in the guise that Iran had weapons of mass destruction. They never did find any.

Bodyguards and Assassins ...

Hello ...
First let me just admit right off the bat that ...
I'm not a fan of Hong Kong cinema ...
I can't handle guys with white beards fighting on top of trees ...
Nor can I handle the "Master" teaching how to run on water ...
But a friend passed me this movie with confidence ...
Saying thats it one of the best movies to come out recently ...
The movie is called Body Guards and Assassins ...
It stars an ensemble cast ... lotsa good talent here ...
I dunno many HK or Chinese actors ...
But the some names were familiar to me from my days in KL ...
The plot is not that original ... but it works wonders ...

Exiled Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-sen ...
Is returning to the British colony ...
To meet with alliance leaders to plan an insurrection ...
Against the Qing imperial government ...
Qing send out officials to assassinate Sun Yat-sen ...
But activist gather bodyguards to protect Yat-sen ...

Character development was good for the twists to come later ...
The choreography was really good ... I mean seriously good ...
The sets were impressive to say the least ...
Did a very good job of recreating Hong Kong in the 1900s ...
It a political thriller rather than a martial arts mash up ...
But gets bloody and vicious when it needs to be ...
Its a good dramatic film and invokes good emotions ...
Overall ... an awesome movie ... highly recommended ...
No wonder it won a few awards and got nominated for so many ...
In the latest Asian Film Awards ...

Where we all call 'Home' ...

Hello ...
Few days back ... on recommendation from some of my friends ...
I downloaded and watched a documentary called 'Home' ...
And I tell you ... it was awesome ... it totally blew my mind ...
Home by Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a beautifully shot panorama ...
Planet Earth and the damage done to it by modern humanity ...
The film has breathtaking aerial footage from 54 countries ...
Showing the pure beauty of our planet with amazing facts ...
Glenn Close narrates the journey with very good original music ...
We are shown the history of Earth how everything came about ...
And how everything is interconnected and balance maintained ...
It shows us how we ... as the dominant species on this planet ...
Has been brutally drilling in to our natural resources ...
Without a thought about sustainability or future consequences ...
It shows how far the ripples of our industrial decisions go ...
It also shows us ... towards the end of the film ...
That there are cities ... regions and nations ... that have ...
Made some forward thinking investments in to the future ...
And how ... we too can be responsible towards our only home ...
I highly recommend this film to anyone and everyone ...
Who has ever had a thought about our planet ... our earth ...
Watch this documentary ... and be blown away ...

Transform this ... transform that ...

Hello ...
I was in KL a few days back ...
I had the chance to watch Transformers 2 on big screen ...
I was all excited waiting in line for an hour to get tickets ...
But it seems my excitement was short lived ...
The moment the movie began ... after 20 mins of ads ...
It went downhill from that point onwards ...
Let me tell you ...I really liked the first Transformers movie ...
But this Revenge of the Fallen could not have sucked more ...
The story with Sam brain sync'd with an alien map ...
Too many robots and machines introduced in too little time ...
Stuff blowing up for no apparent reason as if it just had to ...
About 30 mins into the movie ... I was confused ...
I didn't know which was which ... or who was fighting who ...
Who was good and who was evil ... just metal against metal ...
Megan Fox was there ... she was hot ... enough said ...
Sam saves the day with the sand in his socks ... awesome !!!
The whole movie was like one big explosion ...
They say they could stay hidden in plain sight ...
They should have stayed that way ...
Gonna have to watch this movie a few times to make sense ...
If you like Michael Bay and his bad ass movies ...
You'll love this ... if not ... welcome to the club ...
Food for thought ... all the cars in the movie was from GM ...
And GM went bankrupt long before this movie came out ...
Yes ... I know I'm gonna get flamed by the fanboys ...

Enjoy .mkv movies in HD glory ...

Hello ...
With several High-Def movies now available for download ...
I've been try to figure out a way ...
To watch these movies on my 37" Philips TV ...
The problem I was facing was with the file formats ...
As you may know ... most HD movies come as .mkv files ...
And most of the Multi Media players sold today ...
Do not support this format ... not even with latest firmwares ...
So the best and easiest way to play these movies on my TV ...
Was to connect a computer to my TV and fire up VLC ...
However ... connecting a computer to my TV ...
Just to watch HD movies ...was a bit of an overkill for me ...
And so the research began ... to solve this problem ...
My answer came from Western digital ... a reputable company ...
I've been using their products for several years ...
And they've never failed on me ... they've earned my trust ...
They've recently released their Multi Media Player ...
It's called WD TV Live ... and reviews were sprouting up all good ...
It was small ... good design ... sturdy build ...
It handles a whole lot of audio and video formats ...
The best part was it played .mkv files ... at 1080p resolution ...
It was available in a few shops in Male' ... I couldn't wait ...
I sold the Abigs divX player from Sarotech ...
Ran out and bought WD TV Li... cheapest was at Formax shop ...
Installation was simple ... power and HDMI cables only ...
Picture quality is good ... I mean really very good ...
User interface is nice ... and the unit is silent in operation ...
WD TVs have become very popular now ... no surprises there ...
And as with all other products that become popular ...
WD TVs are being hacked and modded for extra functionality ...
Check out www.wdtvc.com for more info ...
I wish I'll not regret my decision to by this gadget ...
May be I never will .. eh ... ???  ;)

Don’t wanna see another 11:59 on screen…

Hello …
I watched the Vantage Point few days ago …
The movie had a good ensemble cast…
Dennis Quiad … Forrest Whitaker … Mathew Fox …
So I hate to say this but it was down right lame …
I’ll be the first to admit that the movie had a fresh concept …
It seems to me like the story unfolded in layers …
Each layer of the story being a personal account …
The movie keeps looping back every 25 mins or so …
It shows us the same events but from a different perspective …
The repetition was cool the first time … OK the next …
But when the clock turns back to 11:59 the third time …
It became annoying … almost dizzying towards the end …
It was not a movie I enjoyed … it let me down …

Saw Spiderman 3 last night … it ROCKED !!!

Spiderman 3 … Spiderman bonded with the symbiote … kewl …

Hello …
Saw Spiderman 3 last night, and I tell you ... it rocked …
It was better than the last two Spiderman movies …
The action sequences were utterly spectacular …
I’m gonna share my thoughts about the movie here …

So in here goes the standard spoiler alert bit …

Good points …
- The cast was good except for Kirsten Dunst …
- The story was ok … but a little crammed …
- The fight scenes were great … obviously …
- Gwen Stacy is like really hot … damn … !!!
- The CGI was kewl … especially Sandman …
- Venom was like great … very badass …
- Spiderman has finally mastered his abilities …
- The dark Spiderman was the best … liked him …

Bad points …
- I just don’t like Kirsten Dunst in this movie …
- Peter and MJ just don’t look good together anymore …
- MJ’s character is weak … always damsel in distress …
- More villains than one movie can properly handle …
- Sandman was very peripheral to the movie …
- Venom didn’t get enough screen time …

All in all it was a good movie … really enjoyed it …
Wish I could see it in IMAX … that would’ve been nice …

10 movies I’m waiting for in ‘07 …

Hello …
Its has been a slow year for me in the movies arena ..
There just doesn’t seem to be any good movies coming out …
So, I made a list of ten movies I want to see this year …
Give me your thoughts … tell me if I’ve missed anything good …
The list below is random … not necessarily in any order …
Spider-Man 3
1- Spider-Man 3 – The third installment of the popular comic franchise sees Peter and Mary Jane finally together, but with three new enemies: the Sandman, Venom and Spidey's old enemy: the New Goblin, his best friend, Harry Osborn, threatens the lives of people close to Peter. The greatest battle lies within.
The Bourne Ultimatum
2- The Bourne Ultimatum - Bourne races to discover the final mysteries of his past while a government agent tries to track him down after a shootout in Moscow. By Final, I mean the finale’ as in the trilogy. But there are more books out there with Jason Bourne. I’ve of course read the book. It rocked.
Eva Almighty

3- Evan Almighty - The last time we saw Evan Baxter, he was being tormented by rival Bruce Nolan onscreen, live from their Buffalo TV station. But as time passed Evan has made up with Bruce, he's gone onto better things. Newly elected as a congressman in pursuit of a greater calling. But that calling isn't serving in politics, but being summoned by the Almighty himself, who has handed Evan the task of building a new ark, much as Noah did before.
The Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer
4- The Fantasic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - After the death of Dr.Doom the Fantastic Four feels life is back to normal for the team. And Reed Richards and Sue Storm get married. Little do they know that a new enemy the Silver Surfer takes charge to destroy the earth and it's up to the fantastic four to stop him. As they also deal with the return of Dr. Doom.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
5- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle. The trailer wasn’t much, but am hoping the movie will be better.
Ocean’s Thirteen
6- Ocean’s Thirteen - Danny Ocean circles up the boys for a third a heist, after casino owner Willy Bank (Al Pacino) double-crosses one of the original eleven, Reuben Tishkoff. How can one not anticipate this movie. The cast alone blows my mind.
Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard
7- Live Free or Die Hard - When a criminal plot is in place to take down the entire computer and technological structure that supports the economy of the United States (and the world), it's up to a decidedly "old school" hero, police detective John McClane, to take down the conspiracy, aided by a young hacker. John McClane is back.
Grindhouse
8- Grindhouse - A homage to exploitation B-movie thrillers that combines two feature-length segments into one double-bill designed to replicate the grind house theatergoing experience of the 70s and 80s. In "Death Proof," a psycho named Stuntman Mike stalks and kills beautiful women with his car. In "Planet Terror," a small-town sheriffs' department has to deal with an outbreak of murderous, infected people called "sickos." A gun-legged woman named Cherry and her martial arts-wielding partner take on the zombie army. The two films will be fused together by fake movie trailers. Whew!!!
Transformers
9- Transformers - Dueling alien races, the Autobots and the Decepticons, bring their battle to Earth, leaving the future of humankind hanging in the balance. I’ve been waiting for this movie since I was a kid. Dunno why no body ever thought of doing a version of this movie a bit earlier. Here it is now, and if it is anything like the trailer, it will blow our collective minds away. Autobots … transform.
Rush Hour 3
10- Rush Hour 3 - While in Paris, Lee and Carter inadvertently get mixed up with the Chinese Triad crew. Am hoping there will be a lot of Paris, hot ladies, A lot of talking and immensely entertaining martial arts sequences. Tucker and Chan has proved to be good together. They could have thrown Owen Wilson in as well. Hehe ...

So … have I missed out on anything good to come … ?
Let me know if you guys think of any good movies this year …
Wish you guys a good movie experience ...

Ghostrider …

Watched Ghostrider movie several days ago …
Just couldn’t wait but tell you … it sucked …
Okay … I admit I was never a Ghostrider comic fan …
But I always admired how kewl he was … when on fire …
How could I not … come on … the guy is on fire …
His skull is on fire … he rides a bike which is literally on fire …
How can you get more bad-ass than that … eh ?
When I first watched the trailer … I was awed out …
Good narration and good 3D … kewl stunts … and all …
Nicholas Cage as Ghostrider … a good thing … right … ?
Wrong … all wrong … dead wrong …
Story sucked like no other …the villains were half-assed …
Its almost a joke how Ghostrider gets rid of 'em …
All what the movie has going for it are …
Nicholas Cage’s acting … and the hot babe Eva Mendes …
And the good CGI … fire looks like fire … thats kewl …
A movie made for a quick buck … trash to the max …

300 the movie …

Hello …
Watched 300 last night … it was incredibly good …
If you have been living in Mars for a while …
Let me tell you a little about this movie …
300 is about the Battle of Thermopylae …
Where in 480 BC a force of only 300 Spartan soldiers …
Lead by King Leonidas held off an invading Persian army …
Numbering in the hundreds of thousands … for three days …
The movie is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller …
The same guy who did Sin City …
The guy who is going to do the next Batman movie …
I normally don’t like war movies …
But this movie had all the necessary elements like …
Strategy … bravery … sacrifice … brutality …
Honor … loyalty … betrayal … yes …the dagger …
This movie just blew me away … on so many levels …
The acting was good and engaging …
The battles were ferocious and violent splendor …
The cinematography was superb …
The lighting … the composition …the high contrast …
The camera movements … the slow motion … all good …
Every frame was like a Photoshop masterpiece …
Ready to be printed and hung on a wall ...
A stunning kewl movie which will takes you back …
To ancient Greece … and explicitly demonstrate …
The strength and perseverance … of Spartan Army …
One of the must see movies of the year …
There is no excuse for missing this movie …

PS ::
The title of the post is a line …
By the King Leonidas … before his final battle …

Blood Diamond poster ...Blood Diamon movie still ...
Hello …
Watched the Blood Diamond last night …
Its got Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connelly … kewl …
It also got Djimon Hounsou … you might not have heard of him …
The movie is about conflict diamond trading in Africa …
Its very entertaining with harrowing action sequences …
Its also very informative on the subject … a real eye opener …
If you girls watch this movie … and I doubt that you would …
It’d make you think twice about those diamonds …
The movie does not suggest consumers boycott diamonds …
Just that you be vigilant in asking about their origin.
A nice watch … the kinda movie that warrants a re-watch …

The first movies watched on TV with the player …
Alien … part 1 2 3 4 … Sigourney Weaver kicks ass …
Yeah i was feeling a bit nostalgic to watch alien …
But hey, movie marathons work for me … hehe …
Every one out there who is in to movies …
Get yourself a divX player … u’ll not regret it …
Most of the movies i get r in divX or Xvid format …
And if you cant watch divX … u’ll miss out a lot …
DivX rules … hehe … so does all other formats … hehe ...

Hello ...
Just watched the trailer of the new James Bond movie ...
Casino Royale ... starring Daniel Craig as Bond ...
The trailer looks good ...
And I think Daniel Craig really can pull it off as Bond ...
I first saw Daniel Craig in Layer Cake ...
His acting was good and the movie was superb ...
Well ... can't say anything for sure until November ...
Though Casino Royale is a remake ...
I guess I'm ready for another Bond installment ...
It been sometime since a new guy introduced himself ...
As Bond ... James Bond ...
Hoping this is gonna reboot the franchise good ...
