About time ... got myself a Nokia E71 ... :)

Hello ...
Its been sometime since I blogged about gadgets ...
But this sure is a good time to do so ...
As you may know if you follow me on twitter ...
I was having an iPhone ... and I enjoyed it a lot ...
I'll be the first to say ... the apple iPhone is a good phone ...
Its a fancy device ... its the smoothest touch phone ever ...
But for me ... it had some annoying limitations ...
Bluetooth didn't work ... couldn't forward text messages ...
I couldn't even send a contact's detail to a friend ...
(Yeah ... i know about WeTool ... it seldom works) ...
These small annoyances can make one go mad pretty soon ...
So I decided to get a new phone and started to explore options ...
I finally settled on the new Nokia E71 ... and sold my iPhone ...
Believe me when I say this ... Nokia E71 is an amazing phone ...
Its really looks nice ... and build quality feels really good ...
It has a full qwerty keyboard and some kewl functions ...
I use fring for IM/Skype ... and twibble for twittering ...
And ofcoz ... I installed Opera Mini as my browser ...
I'm testing push email on it ... with emoze ...
Its a very stable phone ... haven't crashed yet ...
If you are in the market for a smart mobile device ...
I recommend you seriously consider the new Nokia E71 ...
That being said ... I do have a small problem ...
If I have a contact saved in the format +960xxxxxxx ...
If I get a text message ... the name would come up fine ...
But if a get a call ... it shows the number without +960 ...
I've been told a firmware update would fix this ...
But so far ... there is no upgrade available for my phone ...
I do know a guy who has the same Nokia E71 he bought in Dubai ...
He doesn't seem to have this problem with his phone ...
So i guess it the software and a region setting ... or both ...
Any help in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated ...
Laterx ...

eMoze Push mail is really amazing on Nokia devices. Much better than the solution Nokia offers.

Looks more like a Treo clone to me. Proving that Palm got it right a long time ago.

what about other countries dialing code?

eMoze is good ... but i guess it would have been better if i had flat rate GPRS plan ... which is not available in the country yet ... :(

I do face the +960 issue too. So far didn't try to fix it. Will have to see what options are there. Apart from that E71 is a cool phone. I use SIP (voip) on it too.

hey.. I had the same issue before with my Iphone. But I managed to come up with my own solvency to it.

There should be a number template file located somewhere inside the phones firmware. So you need to find a way to get your hands on a fully downloaded raw firmware file and extract the files out of it.

Find the numbertemplate file... and there are lot of forums explaining how number templates are derived in such files for different countries.

You could try getting youself inside the OS files on your phone and look for the file(s) regarding the number templating.

If it was an Iphone I could have given a step by step guide.. but since I never touched that phone.. I dont know for sure. But I am pretty sure that its gonna be like the way I just said. So google your way throug.. I am sure you will find something. least now you know how to take your approach.

Hope you do fine.. laterz!

The Nokia E71 is a better bet than an iPhone if not for the period syncing issues to macs... it's not the Nokia OS but Mac OSX. I used a Nokia E61i prior.

The iPhone is a great video and music player - with phone capability just for name sake.

We always seem to have an attachment to Nokia. I personally don't like Symbian OS though, seems too feature limited with few community applications.

Why not go for the Android?
