I wanna buy this Camera … should I … ?

Olympus SP-550 Ultra Zoom …

Hello ...
Everybody admires a good picture ... right ???
I've been interested in photography for a while now ...
And am thinking it would be a good hobby ...
Am sure most of you hobbyist photographers will agree ...
So to start off ... am contemplating buying this camera ...
Its an Olympus ... SP-550 Ultra Zoom ...
If you want ... you can read a review here ...
I know its not a professional camera ... its not that good ...
But hey ... I'm not a professional ... not just yet anyway ...
As you guys are probably aware by now ...
There is a great deal of technique involved ...
With shooting a great picture ... not just dumb luck ...
And this camera gives me the ability to go manual ...
With the ease of point and shoot simplicity ...
So what do you flickr guys think ... ???
Will this be a good investment ... ???
Laterx ...

Hello Zahid ...
Thank you for commenting ...
I checked out the canon A640 ...
And i've got this to say ...
1) The zoom is a bit limited ...
2) I dont like the form factor ...
3) No support for RAW format ...
4) Olympus is faster and gives me 5 shots a second ...
5) The movie clips in Olympus are in .mov format ...
But i guess A640 is a good camera ...
But I'm still leaning towards Olympus ...
Hehe ... thanks again zahid ...

As you said olympus is a good choice ...
Cheaper than most brands but with kind of the same functions and features ...
Hope i can take a few good pics like what you have shared with us in flickr ...

i dont like SONY camera ...
They charge a lot for the brand name and the colors of the pics are not as vibrant as the competitors ...
But i guess SONY has some good cameras ... but i dont think they are worth the cash we have to cough up ...
hehe ...

I own the Olympus 550 UZ and love using it. You can get very high quality pictures out of this digital camera but you have to work at it - especially at the ultra zoom end (504mm). Auto focus tends to wander at 504mm and can be a challenge to lock on accurately.

Also - in regards to the ultra zoom - some photos taken at 504mm will have noticeable purple fringing and chromatic aberration when viewed at 100%. Not all the time - but it will be there...so be prepared for it if you buy this camera and take a lot of photos at full zoom.

The macro is awesome on this little camera. Super macro setting allows for extremely close and high quality macro photography.

I also really like the 28mm wide angle capability which is lacking on most other comparable cameras that also have ultra zoom focal lengths.

This camera does not do well at ISO settings higher than 200. The photos get very noisy and mostly unusable at the faster ISO's. Very disappointing in this regard - so if this is important to you then don't buy this digital camera.

Hope this helps...

Also take a look at the Canon Powershot S5 IS. I own this one too - Much faster camera in start up, write speed and auto focus lock on. You don't get the extreme wide angle, and ultra zoom, nor the high quality macro that the 550 UZ has - however the picture quality is slightly better with slightly sharper and more vibrant results...and it is easier and quicker to use.

Like I said ... Get the Olympus 550 UZ if you are into macro photography and take lots of wide angle shots - and also like the flexibility of going to ultra zoom without having to carry adapters...but don't mind working a little extra hard to get good quality photos out of the ultra zoom end - especially in regards to accurate focus.

hello ...
thank you very much for the detailed response ...
you have really given me a lot ...
but i'm just a casual hobbyist photographer ...
and 18x zoom and the high ISO aren't important to me ...
So i guess i'm still leaning towards to this camera ...
Will buy it at the end of this month or early next month ...
will make sure to let you know how it goes ...
thanks again for the detailed response ...
really appreciated ...

dude,
if you are really into photography as a hobby, bye a good camera like Nikon d70/d70s. SLR is no play,.. most of them are not equipped with video capability.

now.. if your idea of photography is less than a hobby, look into a slim camera with good battery life.. fits well into the pocket and get you what you need including vids.

i think what you need is a good camera,,, never hesitate...
